After a long wait, Walt Disney Company has officially confirmed 18 May 2022 as the launch date of the Disney+ (Disney Plus) streaming service in South Africa — priced at R119 per month or R1,190 for an annual subscription. That means Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic and Disney fans in South Africa can finally enjoy the full scope of the Disney extensive library along with the rest of the world. Of course, this includes catching films like Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Soul, Turning Red, Luca, Cruella (starring Emma Stone), Encanto, Robert Zemeckis’ live-action take on Pinocchio, and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers in the comfort of your own home in HD quality.
Streaming Quality and Features
While the official press release has yet to confirm the quality of the stream (which we hope will be 4K HDR or Dolby Vision), Disney+ South Africa will allow users to have four active concurrent streams and unlimited downloads across up to ten devices. That’s quite impressive, considering the limitations placed on streamers from other services. But that’s not all. Disney has also confirmed that the Disney Plus service in South Africa will include the Star content hub — which means we’re not only getting the family-friendly content but shows and movies aimed at adult audiences too. Viewers will be able to enjoy content from FX, Freeform, Hulu, ABC Signature, 20th Television, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures.
Fan Favourites and Upcoming Shows
That means Disney Plus in South Africa will give you access to other fan favourites like the Alien movie franchise, Grey’s Anatomy, Deadpool, X-Men, Planet of the Apes, Starship Troopers, The Simpsons, and a lot more. Of course, the main reason fans have wanted Disney+ in South Africa is the current Star Wars and Marvel content, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings (starring Simu Liu) and some of the other shows we’ve missed over the last two years. Subscribers can also look forward to upcoming shows like Moon Knight (starring Oscar Isaac) and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Value for Money
Essentially, what I’m trying to say is that there’s a lot of content (and other general entertainment) — tailored to everyone in the entire family. There might even be a cheaper option coming next year (or later this year) as Disney rolls out its ad-supported version in 2022. Still, at R119 per month, that’s value for money. It’s going to be difficult for South Africans to pass on the opportunity to enjoy their favourite content at home while enjoying the comfort of their own couch. 18 May 2022 couldn’t come fast enough.
Disney+ Annual Subscription Offer
Update: A Disney+ Annual Subscription is now available for R950 (an exclusive introductory offer) — which basically means you can enjoy 12 Months of Disney+ for the price of eight. The usual price is R1190 for an annual subscription to Disney+ in South Africa. This introductory offer will only be available to those who pre-register their interest in Disney+ before midnight on 17 May 2022, ahead of the launch date in South Africa on www.disneyplus.com.
