Can somebody explain to me why the showrunners of House of the Dragon didn’t film all four seasons back to back? It was pretty obvious from the start that this Game of Thrones spin-off would be a fan favorite. So why make us wait two years between seasons? That’s a long time, and let’s face it, it didn’t make Season 2 any easier to watch. By the time it rolled around, a lot of fans had either forgotten what was going on or just lost interest. Add in the snail’s pace of the season, and you have a recipe for frustration. It seems HBO has found a solution. Now, as production on Season 3 ramps up, another spin-off is ready to go. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already wrapped its first season, and fans can look forward to its premiere later this year. That’ll be a welcome distraction while we wait for more Targaryen drama from House of the Dragon.

So, what exactly is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms all about? Well, it’s a six-episode series based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, and it takes place a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The show will follow “a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall,” played by Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters), and his diminutive squire, Egg, played by ten-year-old Dexter Sol Ansell (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes). The official logline teases us with this: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to drop around Q4 2025, which is just in time to fill the House of the Dragon-shaped hole in your life.

The war in Westeros will continue in House of the Dragon Season 3, which is set to begin filming in the first quarter of 2025. “2025 is gonna be utter madness from January like third until deep in the fall when we wrap production. We do [have a start date for production], I don’t want to say it because it’ll be a thing, but it’s first quarter 2025,” Showrunner Ryan Condal revealed on The Stuff Dreams are Made Of podcast.
The Dance with Dragons story will continue with James Norton joining the cast as Alicent Hightower’s cousin, Ormund Hightower. Although the character has been mentioned throughout the series so far, season 3 will mark his first appearance onscreen. Daeron Targaryen and his dragon, Tessarion, will also show up; however, HBO has yet to confirm the actor playing Daeron.
Many fans felt frustrated with the conclusion of House of the Dragon Season 2. Some argued that the show is moving too slowly to get to the exciting bits of the story. Showrunner Ryan Condal addressed these issues on a virtual press conference, saying, “When you’re a showrunner, you’re always in the position of having to balance storytelling and the resources that you have available to tell that story,” Condal said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We wanted to rebalance the story in such a way that we had three great seasons of television [after season 1] to round out and tell this story. When you’re trying to mount the show, which requires a tremendous amount of resources, construction, armor, costumes, visual effects … we are trying to give the Gullet—which is arguably the second most anticipated action event of Fire & Blood—the time and the space that it deserves. We are building to that event that will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling, and it should be the biggest thing to date that we’ve pulled off,” Condal continued. “We just wanted to have the time and the space to do that at a level that is going to excite and satisfy the fans in the way it’s deserved. We also wanted to build some anticipation toward it. So I apologize for the wait.”
Condal also confirmed that House of the Dragon would only run for two more seasons – four in total. However, if you think HBO’s done with Westeros spin-offs, think again. There are still a ton of projects in development. Aegon’s Conquest, an animated series The Golden Empire (set in ancient Yi Ti), and Nine Voyages, which focuses on the legendary Sea Snake. Plus, we’re getting a Ten Thousand Ships pilot, centered on Princess Nymeria, and—yes, you read that right—a Jon Snow sequel might be back on the table, too.
So no, House of the Dragon Season 3 won’t be next, but there’s plenty more to keep you entertained in the meantime. Let’s just hope HBO has learned from past mistakes: If you’re going to tweak the material, make it better. Let’s hope A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms does that.
