Back in August, Huawei South Africa launched the Nova Y60 alongside its big brother as part of the Nova series. It was designed for young users with a passion for content creation for social media. The unit is at the bottom end of the mid-range category. As such, it features a 4G chipset arranged for budget purposes but can still hold its own, in terms of performance, against other units in the category. It brings with it great value at an affordable price point, with a great battery and additional features. Let’s take a closer look at what the Huawei Nova Y60 has to offer.
Huawei Nova Y60 Design and Display
Huawei offers the Y60 in two colour variants: Crush Green and Midnight Black. It’s not the greatest range available, but it looks decent enough. It has a fluid look about it, with rounded edges and a matte finish to boot. The rear has a textured look but doesn’t feel that way to the touch.
It has a fairly large screen at 6.6″. This, however, isn’t unusual when it comes to modern smartphones across all categories. Additionally, it has a TFT LCD (IPS) with reasonable colour reproduction. With its 1,600x720px resolution display, it gets the job done.
Internal Hardware
Although it doesn’t have the most powerful processor under the hood, its lightweight version of open-source Android provides an efficient experience overall. It also does well to make up for the lack of power with some nifty features.
The Huawei Nova Y60 offers a smooth experience of Android 10 OS despite not offering the full Google Suite.
Camera Quality
One of the key focus areas for Huawei with the Nova Y60 is the camera configuration. Despite the price, it still manages to offer something good with the triple-lens camera setup.
- 13 MP Main Camera (f/1.8 aperture)
- 5 MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera (f/2.2 aperture)
- 2 MP Depth Camera (f/2.4 aperture)
It offers good images for shots in well-lit environments. The 13MP lens does a good job in terms of colour reproduction and clarity. However, it does suffer quite significantly in low-light conditions. However, the 5MP ultra-wide lens and 2MP depth camera don’t offer great value.
Huawei Nova Y60 Battery Life
Another of the standout performances of the Huawei Nova Y60 is the battery. The unit packs a 5000mAh battery under the hood, which provides sufficient charge to last the day – and then some.
It manages to eke out an impressive 10-12 hour uptime, even when under heavier loads such as running games.
The only negative about the battery is that it doesn’t offer super-fast charging capabilities. This means that the large battery will take some time to fully charge when depleted.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, the Huawei Nova Y60 is a very solid smartphone. For its cost, there are plenty of features and decent performance thanks to the lightweight OS. Minus a few setup issues as a result of not including the Play Store, it operates quite well once you’ve overcome these challenges.
The unit is available in South Africa at a retail price of R3,099, which makes it a very enticing offer.
