From Tarantino’s blood-soaked dialogues to Wes Anderson’s pastel-filled dreamscapes, directors develop their unique marks on film. DC’s James Gunn, in particular, has built a reputation for a style that blends vibrant visuals, a good dose of humor, a heartwarming emotional journey, and, of course, a quirky animal sidekick or two. But will all of this be present in his upcoming Superman movie? In other words, will James Gunn’s Superman (2025) be like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies?
Fans who are still holding onto Zack Snyder’s darker, more serious vision of the DCEU may be in for a surprise with James Gunn’s Superman (previously known as Superman: Legacy). In a recent interview, Anthony Carrigan, who plays Metamorpho, teased that the new Superman film won’t exactly mirror the tone of Guardians of the Galaxy. Fans of Gunn’s Marvel work may be familiar with his goofier take on the Guardians, but Superman, as Carrigan points out, is a whole different beast.
“I’m hesitant to liken it to Guardians,” Carrigan said when asked about the film’s tone. “But I do think that Superman has the same heart and intelligence. That’s James’ trademark. But I think it’s going to be its own thing entirely.”

So, while the film may still capture that signature Gunn warmth and intelligence, expect Superman to stand apart from his past work. Superman, as one of the most iconic characters in pop culture, is a far cry from the relatively unknown Guardians. Gunn is following a big legacy of DC films, most notably Snyder’s more somber, action-heavy approach. But Gunn is known for shaking things up, and this fresh take may just offer something the fans didn’t expect.
Now, let’s talk about that first teaser. If you were expecting a deep dive into the plot, you were probably left a little underwhelmed. Gunn himself has admitted that the teaser barely scratches the surface of the film’s story. Some test screenings have sparked mixed reactions. Early reports claimed the film was overloaded with goofy jokes, while others pointed to new edits that better balance humor and serious moments. It’s still unclear which direction the final cut will take, but one thing’s for sure: Gunn is working hard to deliver a polished product.

Superman, which hits theaters on July 11, 2025, stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, among others. Fans will likely get a much clearer sense of the film’s tone with the second trailer, which we’re all eagerly waiting for.
Until then, we’re left with rumors and a few glimmers of hope. Will James Gunn’s take on Superman be a hit or miss? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
