In 2021, during a roundtable discussion, Majors disclosed his ultimate dream role: Edward Scissorhands. The 31-year-old actor, who had just created a sensation with Lovecraft Country, had already secured his place in Hollywood, headlining Netflix’s The Harder They Fall and stepping into the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. So, suffice it to say, there was a lot of anticipation around his career at this moment. But Jonathan Majors as Edward Scissorhands? That’s the role he wanted?
Now, before you think of Majors attempting to slice through suburban hedges with metallic fingers, let’s really think about what that could look like. Sure, Johnny Depp’s Ed is iconic, but Majors could put a completely new spin on Edward. And the potential for that is huge when you think about the fact that the world is now so different from 1990. Imagine an Edward in a different location, reimagined for a new time period, and facing a whole different set of challenges.
It’s a strange idea to think about. How might viewers react to an African American performer playing a part that Depp made notable? Would they be receptive to it, or would social media blow up with “this isn’t my Edward” memes?

However, officially, there is no reboot in the works. In a Cadillac ad, Timothée Chalamet sort of stepped into Edward’s shoes, taking on the role of Edward’s son. Winona Ryder even reprised her role as Kim. But that’s as close as we’ve come to a real sequel or reboot.
That said, a few years ago, Majors’ career came to a screeching halt. The actor, who seemed to be on a path to becoming the next big thing in the MCU, playing Kang the Conqueror, found himself at the center of a domestic violence scandal. After being convicted in 2023 of assault and harassment, he was dropped by Marvel. Rumors swirled that the studio was seeking a replacement—names like Colman Domingo came up in conversation.
Now, as Majors works to rebuild his career, he’s preparing for the release of Magazine Dreams, which hits theaters on March 21. It’s a film that almost didn’t happen, after it was dropped by the original distributor due to the scandal. But Briarcliff Entertainment is backing it, and Majors is determined to push forward. He’s even described it as “a love letter to filmmaking.”
So, maybe Jonathan Majors won’t get his Edward Scissorhands moment, but could a Magazine Dreams redemption arc be on the horizon?
