Although it isn’t an official sequel, the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise continues thanks to the gorgeous short film Dylan’s New Nightmare (2023). With the last official movie having been A Nightmare on Elm Street’s reboot in 2010, it has been almost 15 years since the world got to enjoy a new movie from the franchise, and while it’s an unofficial sequel, fans got to enjoy the performance of a new actor playing Freddy Krueger.
Dylan’s New Nightmare
Dylan’s New Nightmare is an unofficial sequel to Wes Craven’s A New Nightmare (1994), the first movie in the franchise written and directed by the creator of the original 1984 movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The 1994 film starred the excellent Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger and shows a fourth wall break as Freddy Krueger starts to hunt down the actors in Hollywood who were a part of making the original films.
In the movie, Wes Craven stars as himself, as does Heather Langenkamp, and Miko Hughes steps into the role of her son Dylan. After facing Freddy for what they think is the last time, all seems well. 25 years go by, and we are now in Dylan’s New Nightmare, where Miko Hughes reprises his role as Dylan, the now grown son of Heather Langenkamp, as “the evil entity known as Freddy Krueger is back, and eager to once again break into our world through the son of his favourite victim.”
Robert Englund Has Retired From The Elm Street Franchise
Although Robert Englund will forever hold the title of the iconic Freddy Krueger in our hearts, at 75, he announced his retirement from the role in 2023. Hearts were broken when they heard the news, but we all understand that he was getting on in years and couldn’t keep up with the demands of the role.
In an interview with Fandomwire, Englund was asked if we would ever see him return to the screen. He replied, “I’m too old and thick to play Freddy now.” He continued that he couldn’t enact fight scenes for more than one take, citing his bad neck, back, and arthritis as the main deterrents. “I have to hang it up, but I would love to cameo.”
That being said, during the filming of Dylan’s New Nightmare, the film required a new star to fill the role of Freddy Krueger, and Dave McRae wasn’t playing when he stepped up to the plate.
Dave McRae’s Freddy Krueger Is Killing It
Dave McRae, a Pro Voice Actor and the genius filmmaker behind It’s Me, Billy, did an amazing job as the new Freddy Krueger. Fans said that his performance was “up there with Robert Englund” and that he is the second-best Freddy Actor after the original.
Several fans are hoping that the film will get the love it deserves and will be released theatrically instead of just on YouTube. Until that day, if you want to watch this amazing next step in the A Nightmare on Elm Street story, you can watch it here:
