Captain America: Brave New World. Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvel probably isn’t going to win any awards for creative movie titles. Nevertheless, fans are working hard to decipher the title after Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures officially revealed the title for the fourth Spider-Man movie in the MCU at CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas. What does it mean for Peter Parker’s adventures in the MCU? Is it a soft reboot for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? And is it directly connected to one of the most controversial Spider-Man comic book stories of all time? Maybe.
A Fresh Start for the MCU’s Spider-Man

There’s no doubt that the Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie title means a fresh start for Your Friendly Neighborhood Webhead. Following the dramatic ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was left completely alone after Doctor Strange’s spell erased all memory of him from the world. This paved the way for a brand-new status quo, and now it’s confirmed that Holland’s Peter Parker will be kicking off an all-new trilogy, starting with Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2026.
Speaking at CinemaCon via a video message, Tom Holland shared a brief but telling statement about the movie’s title:
“I know we left you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of No Way Home… so Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start… That’s all I can say.”
While the title might seem like a simple way to signal a new chapter for Peter Parker, longtime comic fans also recognize Brand New Day as a callback to a highly divisive storyline from the comics.
The Comic Book Inspiration

The Brand New Day arc in Marvel Comics was a direct result of the One More Day storyline in 2007. In the aftermath of Civil War, Peter Parker publicly unmasked himself, leading to severe consequences. His Aunt May was critically wounded in an assassination attempt meant for him, pushing Peter to make a desperate deal with the demon Mephisto. In exchange for saving May’s life, Mephisto erased Peter and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage from existence, resetting Spider-Man’s world and restoring his secret identity. The result was Brand New Day, a rebooted status quo that aimed to return Peter Parker to his roots as a struggling young superhero.
While that all sounds great on paper, and we can definitely see the similarities to Peter’s story in the MCU, it’s also important to remember that the comic book was widely criticized by fans and critics for undoing years of character growth and relationships, making it one of the most controversial moves in Spider-Man’s history.
What Spider-Man: Brand New Day Could Mean for the MCU

Of course, unlike the comics, where Peter was stripped of his development, the MCU’s Brand New Day will probably serve as a continuation of Spider-Man’s journey rather than a hard reset. However, there are four things we can probably draw from the title:
1. We’ll definitely get to see a lonely Spider-Man. Peter still remembers everything he lost—his relationships, his past life—but the world has moved on without him. So we can expect to see him make new friends and explore new relationships – probably one with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink’s character.
2. Zendaya has been confirmed for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which means we could see Peter restart and rebuild his relationship with MJ. Jacob Batalon (Ned) has also been confirmed, but he’ll probably play a smaller role in the film – if he isn’t the MCU’s Venom, of course.
3. Mephisto will probably be the film’s main villain. If it’s anything like the comic book referenced, we could see Peter being tempted to make another deal to reverse the spell, mirroring the original One More Day storyline.
No matter what happens, however, with the film set between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s clear that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will play a major part in the MCU. While Spider-Man is absent from Doomsday, it’s very likely that he will show up for Secret Wars, and that whatever happens in his storyline affects the plot of the entire franchise, too.
Production Details & Release Date
Sony confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will begin filming in mid-2025, with a planned release date of July 31, 2026. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is at the helm. Cretton has expressed his excitement about tackling the next phase of Peter Parker’s story:
“I’m spending my time exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of the most incredible artists in the world. We’re all, just daily, nerding out over the suit, how to swing, how to create an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven’t really seen before.”
While a lot of fans were hoping that Spider-Man’s next adventure would remain grounded (so that he reflects his story in the comic books more accurately – without all the Tony Stark tech) and not be pulled into another multiversal crisis, Spider-Man: Brand New Day does seem to focus on that idea, at least partialy. I guess fans will have to wait until 2026 to see where Peter Parker’s new journey takes him. That said, one thing is super clear: Brand New Day promises to be a turning point for the web-slinger’s MCU story.
