The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 sees Tim Baltz’s BJ Barnes pick up a new hobby: pole dancing. In Season 4, Episode 2, titled “You Hurled Me Into the Very Heart of the Seas,” BJ shows off his skills and how he’s the master of manipulating his body around the pole. He seems to be really into it, too.
Fortress of Solitude caught up with Baltz to talk about all things related to The Righteous Gemstones, specifically the fourth season. We simply had to know: Was it him swirling around on the pole, or were clever angles used so that a stunt performer could slide in for the shot?
“I trained incredibly hard for several months,” Baltz said. “I was on Creatine for most of the summer last year. The first stunt that I do is completely me. We didn’t use a single stunt double. Then, the second [scene], we had two other stunt doubles, one who’s basically a professional pole dancer – he’s incredible – and then the other was my actual stunt double. So it was hard work.”

In other words, it was a bit of both, but Baltz still put in the work to make sure he wouldn’t need to rely on a lot of quick cuts or the stunt performers. So, bravo to Tim Baltz for going beyond the call of duty and learning how to master pole dancing!
In the same roundtable interview, Baltz and his co-star Edi Patterson, who plays Judy Gemstone, chatted about how they found out that The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 would be the last in the series. According to them, the decision wasn’t announced before the cast started shooting, and they only discovered it much later into the production. Nonetheless, both of them stated they were grateful for receiving four seasons on the show and all the wackiness it brought with it.
