While we’re patiently awaiting the arrival of James Gunn’s Superman, details about the Man of Steel’s most recent escapades continue to fly in. The latest jaw-dropping announcement has placed Tom Cruise in a major role in the upcoming film. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, fans should brace themselves for ‘some major casting surprises’ in Gunn’s Superman flick. These surprises could potentially include Tom Cruise taking on the role of none other than Jor-El.
“Could DC have plans for Cruise? It’s possible… though I can only imagine him as Batman or as Superman’s biological father, Jor-El,” Sneider wrote. “There are said to be some major casting surprises in Gunn’s Superman, and I imagine Jor-El is one of them, so stay tuned on that front…”

While this is more speculation than fact at this point, Sneider does seem sure that a well-known actor could be portraying the titular hero’s biological father from Krypton. And given that the Mission Impossible star recently signed a deal with Warner Bros., the entertainment journalist feels that all signs currently point to him.
I would, however, take this information with a grain of salt as Sneider also threw a few other names into the mix, including Chris Pratt. But it seems Pratt’s inclusion in the film has been ruled out since Marvel still has plans for his Star-Lord character to take on more adventures in the MCU.
Of course, if the rumours are reliable, it does seem like many DC fans are on board with the idea of Cruise joining the franchise. We’ve seen plenty of fans sharing their excitement on social media, so it will be interesting to see if the rumour pans out in the end.

Considering that big names like Russell Crowe and Marlon Brando have previously stepped into the role, it doesn’t seem out of the question for another A-list actor, such as Cruise, to play the iconic DC character.
That said, there is the small matter of Tom’s upcoming Mission Impossible movie, which is scheduled for release towards the end of May. It’s uncertain if he would have had time to commit to another big franchise and if he would even be open to acting in a movie that might clash with his main blockbuster at the cinemas.
Thankfully, there is a considerable wealth of talent already lined up to appear in Supes next adventure, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawk Girl, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
With such a strong cast already in place, there’s plenty to get excited about for the new Superman movie, which will fly into theatres on 11 July 2025.
